While the mercury contamination is an enormous problem in itself, what makes the situation immensely worse is that huge segments of the population remain unaware of the health risks posed by consuming mercury contaminated seafood. One way to help raise awareness of the problem is for grocery stores to post signs warning their customers of the associated risks at their seafood counters. Many stores in the United States have already begun doing so, and certain states and counties require it.
